Vries Student Center
501 North Campus Way

Constructed in 1973, the Vries Student Center came about only after Greyson's graduate students launched a concerted five-year campaign demanding a facility comparable to the Lance Memorial Student Union in a location more convenient to their particular needs. The resultant facility, while smaller and not as frequently renovated, fills those needs fairly well. All told, the three-story Student Center (which also holds a small basement) contains the following:

  • The Camelot Café - The only place in the Student Center that serves food (a few vending machines scattered through the building aside), the Camelot Café is a two-story affair with a somewhat overwrought Arthurian theme. The centerpiece of the first story is a fountain which springs up around a rough-hewn granite stone with glimmering fragments of mica and quartz, into which an ornate sword has been placed. A replica of the painted Round Table from Winchester Castle in England hangs on one wall, and various prints recreate paintings (particularly pre-Raphaelite works) depicting Arthurian or chivalric themes. The upstairs portion of the café contains a number of arcade machines, most of which carry on the knightly theme, with exceptions made for such universal favorites as Pac-Man and Centipede. The counter-service location serves only fast food - burgers, pizza, tacos, chicken, fries, etc. - and various sweets and variations on coffee, which seem in their simplicity to contradict the grandiose surroundings, which go so far as to include stone walls and the Greyson University (as opposed to Greyson College) motto In necessariis unitas, in dubiis libertas, in omnibus caritas (In necessary things unity, in doubtful things liberty, in all things charity) in gold leaf above the door. Though the university's official story is that the café is meant to honor the high ideals of its graduate students, many students feel that the whole place is intended, in all its blatant grandiosity, as a mockery of the organized student movement that demanded the construction of the Vries Center in the first place.

  • The North Campus Mail Center - A small first-floor satellite location to the main center in the Lance Student Union, the North Campus Mail Center holds an office that can handle outgoing campus mail (but not regular post, though there is a dropbox for USPS that's checked around once a day, in the late afternoon) and all the campus mailboxes for the various graduate students. The workers here don't seem to screw up as much or as badly as the ones at the Student Union, but then, they don't have that much to do.

  • The Heineman Computer Lab - Located on the second story, the Heineman Lab is, like its counterpart on the main campus, open twenty-four hours a day whenever classes are in session. Smaller than the Okuda Lab, the Heineman Lab still holds twenty-five terminals, a color printer/copier, two black & white printer/copiers and four scanners which are all connected to the Greyson computing network. There can be a bit of a wait at peak hours, particularly around midterms and finals, but most of the students who really need to use public terminals don't find it difficult to gain access here.

  • The Gryphon Shop - A mere shadow of the main Shadowgard Center location and barely a third the size of the main campus location, the Vries Center's second-story Gryphon Shop sells the textbooks necessary for graduate classes almost to the exclusion of all else - in fact, very often, the textbooks aren't physically there and must be moved from the other locations when requested. The shop also sells some absolute necessities (tissues and other sanitary supplies, aspirin and ibuprofen, cold medicine, etc.) and a few of the most spectacularly popular items of school merchandise, such as shirts and Grey the Gryphon dolls, though this location's stock is meager and hit-and-miss at best. Sometimes there's only one XXL sweatshirt in the store, sometimes there are dozens of shirts but all in petite sizes, and sometimes the only Grey the Gryphon dolls available are factory rejects that should have been caught long before they reached the shelves. All this is taken as just another sign of the contempt the university has for the students who live, study and work on the North Campus, but in truth, this location posted meager sales figures at best even when the university did seem to give a damn.

  • Vaporware - A small first-floor custom computing shop run by the infamous Gamma Lambs, the store is of course named satirically - sales are completed swiftly and the computers built by this shop are incredibly reliable. When asked by the digitally clueless, of course, the staff always insist with a straight face that 'vaporware' refers only to the fact that wireless network cards are included in each and every model, free of charge, allowing the customer to connect to the Greyson computing network the minute they pull the PC out of the box; but fellow geeks know this is all a crock. Unlike the Vries Center's Gryphon Shop location, Vaporware has done quite well as an experiment for the Gamma Lambs - because the project is designed as much to generate goodwill as post profits, at least for the moment, the computers are always offered at prices not far above the cost of the components, meaning that this little custom operation can actually compete somewhat with the larger companies for the hearts and spending money of Greyson's students. Add the inherent speed, power and reliability of the technologies used and developed by the so-called Greek Geeks, and the rising popularity of Vaporware becomes easy enough to see. Of course, the Gamma Lambs are eagerly awaiting the day when the university finally lets them open a new location in the Student Union, but for now, the experiment is still a rousing success even in the less-trafficked Vries building.

  • Large Meeting Rooms - The Vries Center holds three large meeting rooms, each capable of seating up to 100 people safely, with two located on the second story and one located on the third story. These are each named after prominent local historical figures - the Greyson and Sullivan Rooms occupy the second floor, while the Kent Room sits one level above.

  • Small Meeting Rooms - There are seven of these, two on the second floor and five on the third floor, each named after a city or town in Kerry County. The Arkham and Shadowgard Rooms are on the second story, while the Appledale, Claddagh, Silent Hill, Skye Hollow and Tara Rooms are above them; each is able to hold 40 people comfortably.

The basement also holds small satellite offices for Campus Security and Campus Maintenance. In theory, these are staffed by dedicated employees at all times; in practice, they're frequently empty, and calls to these offices go ringing unanswered. The main offices are much more reliable and carefully staffed.
